Head games

Last Saturday, the flavorless Carr Performing Arts Centre played host to "All That Swing and Jive," starring Swingerhead and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. A nearly full house enjoyed a sparkling evening of retro fare, Swingerhead-style, earning enthusiastic approval for the 70-plus musicians' first-set tribute to Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Bobby Darin. During the second set, a zoot-suited Swingerhead kicked it into overdrive and brought the house down with a thrilling program of uptempo originals. The whole shebang was captured by Time-Warner for a possible future broadcast.

"It was a monumental night for us," notes Swingerhead frontman Michael Andrew, who says the planning and preparation for the show took a lot out of him. (He did all the arrangements for the song "Jive." ) Considering his heavy travel schedule between Florida and California for performances, it's no wonder why the whole Swingerhead gang is headed to Hawaii for much-needed R&R.

ORLANDO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA POST-SHOW TESTIMONIAL:

"The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra has been pleased and proud to collaborate with Michael Andrew and Swingerhead. First and foremost, Michael is an exceptional musician who respects and understand the music-making style of the swing era. His talent is a tribute to the musicians of that time, and his performances are of the highest possible quality. Audiences can't get enough of Michael, and his recent subscription concert was the highest attended concert in Orlando Philharmonic history. Needless to say, we have re-engaged Michael for the 2001-2002 season, by popular demand."
David Schillhammer, Executive Director, The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra
